The reason why you should listen to Tyler, The Creator’s album Igor is to listen to good music and hear a story about a character named Igor develop feelings, feel rejection, and go through a heartbreak. Igor’s story can relate to situations in people’s lives having to go through rejection or heartbreak.
Somethings to listen for throughout the album are the lyrics and tone. Rather than just hearing the music, critically listening to the lyrics and tone develops a story for the listeners and builds emotions on ways to feel for the main character Igor. There are a couple songs in particular that demonstrate the correlation with tones and lyrics to feelings and emotions.
The first song to actively listen to is “Earfquake”. Earfquake is the second song on the album and one the highest rated songs on the album. This song shows the happiness and admiration that Igor feels for his person of interest with the main line of the song being “You make my earth quake”.
Shifting the tone to a more emotional beat and changing the trajectory of the story is Gone Gone/Thank You. Gone Gone/Thank You are two songs put into one. This track has a more sad and emotional beat because the lyrics are about Igor getting over his feelings for the person and accepting that they’ll never choose him.
The final song to listen to is called “Are We Still Friends?”. Are We Still Friends is the final song on the Igor album. This song is about Igor wondering about his relationship between him and his person of interest. The tempo and beat of the song does the best job of any song on the album resembling the character’s feelings. It’s not a sad song but not a happy one either, making the listener feel confused, like Igor in his relationship.
