A Dedicated Dance

On November 30th, the West Salem Dance Team performed at halftime for the girl’s basketball game. This was the dance team’s first performance of the year for a basketball halftime, and it was dedicated to Sara Rose Hougom. Destiny Hanson says, “I was personally fulfilled to be able to dedicate our first pom performance to Sara and the Sara Hougom Foundation. The team and I were so grateful that Sherry Hougom and the foundation put in all that hard work to purchase new costumes for us.”

This dance was dedicated to Sara Rose Hougom who was brutally shot in 2012. A foundation was formed after her death called the Sara Rose Hougom Foundation. It raises awareness for violence prevention. Sara’s mother spoke at halftime and shared about her daughter and the foundation. The Sara Rose Hougom Foundation donated new costumes to the West Salem Dance Team. “I was so grateful to the foundation for purchasing new costumes for our team,” said senior dance team member, Emma Brigson, “dancing for her daughter was so inspiring and really made all of us appreciate the season more.” This was the team’s first pom performance of the season.

The team has an Instagram account to share updates and photos. The Instagram page shared information about the halftime show and the dedication to Sara. A week before the performance, the team shared a post on their page to talk a little bit about Sara and the halftime show: “Sara was a member of the WSDT while in high school. Sara was taken too soon, but her friends are doing a great job at keeping her legacy alive. This foundation was so generous to our team and purchased our new football dance uniforms. We are forever grateful for this opportunity. At halftime, we will get the honor to hear Sara’s mom, Sherry, followed by our debut Pom performance,” they posted.

The team will perform at a basketball halftime again on Tuesday December 21st, and Tuesday January 18th, as well as a competition on January 8th.
