A new sport began at West Salem this year; started by sophomores Taylor Hennessey and Maggie Cronk. West Salem is now a part of the swim team co-op with two other schools.  Four West Salem High School students are involved: sophomores Taylor Hennessey and Maggie Cronk, junior Sierra Szymanski, and senior Savannah Domnie.

Hennessey and Cronk worked hard to make sure West Salem High School would be able to join the co-op swim team with Logan and Central High School.  When the idea was approved by the school board last year, they were excited to start the swim season.

This team is run by their dedicated coach Joan Kapellas.  “She’s hard working and strict, but she’s an amazing coach who pushes us to do our best,”  said Taylor Hennessey.  Coach Kapellas is also accompanied by the assistant coach, Brenna Mcguire, and together they work hard to make sure the team is ready for meets.

This competitive team swims two-three hours Monday-Saturday and competes one-two times a week. “Everyone is very welcoming and encouraging,” said Taylor Hennessey.  There is a combined total of seventeen swimmers from West Salem, Logan, and Central High School that participate in the swim team. Over the past three months, the girls have gotten to know their teammates better.  These girls occasionally go out to team dinners and spend a lot of time together.  “It was great to meet people from other schools” said Sierra Szymanski, “I loved becoming good friends with them.”

As the swimming season wrapped up, the swimmers looked forward to sectionals on November 4th in Hudson, Wisconsin. “It feels like just yesterday it was August eighth and we were starting our first day of practice,”  said swimmer Maggie Cronk, “We have worked so hard for the past 3 months, and I cannot wait to see what the final outcome will be.”
