Looking Back: The 2018-2019 School Year

As summer is rapidly approaching, the memories are fading away quickly. West Salem High School had several students go to state-level competitions for sports and various other activities such as VAC and Skills USA. Here are just a few of the many highlights of the 2018-2019 school year.

Madison Dutton earned herself the title of the special qualifier and played in the 2018 Girls Tennis State Individual Tournament in Madison.

One Act Play, Selfies, advanced to state. Vivace finished in 6th place, and Salem Singsations finished in 5th place at the Eau Claire Memorial Winterfest Show Choir Competition.

Dan Schwartz finished 1st in the UW Stout in the Automotive Competition and was a prominent member of SkillsUSA. Ethan Ashbeck took 2nd in Electronic Technology and Sam Quam took 2nd place in job interview.

DECA members, Ryan Schlimgen, Aaron Bahr, John Glassmaker, Kylie Wright, Carissa Hass, Dani Miller, Julia Krien, Rayna Dressel, Kendra Ames, Abby Sharp, Kate Fitzgerald, and Josie Hanson all made it to the DECA International Conference. Among those students, juniors Max Schumacher and Julia Stoleson were elected to represent the State of Wisconsin as State Officers.

The West Salem Visual Arts Classic Team competed in the La Crosse VAC Regional Competition.  Twelve WSHS Students competed in 2 individual Categories and 2 Team Categories. At the end of the day, West Salem earned a first place finish, and will advance to the state competition in April at the University of Madison. Congratulations to Mahli Fleckenstein, Matthew Baldwin, Abby Sharp, Emma Deal, Ada Hage, Morgan Lance, Megan Lassig, Alyssa Szewczyk, Kendra Davidson, Abby LeDoux, Sam Quam, Claudia Dorado, and Anna Johnson.

Congratulations to the competing members of the WSHS forensics team. All those who competed at the District level competition earned scores that advanced them to the State tournament this past April. State qualifiers included Lexi Giblin, Marissa Harris, Chloe Ipsen, Dani Miller, Sam Quam, Alyssa Szewczyk, Megan Lassig, Arin Miller, Shelby Burch and Stephanie Sesvold.

Your candidates for prom queen of 2019 were Abbie Cavadini, Kara Gavaghan, Meghan Hansen, Samantha Kothari, Katie Maliszewski, Taylor Sackett, Julia Stoleson, and Sara Ziegler.  Your candidates for prom king were Parker Allen, Nathan Becker, Wyndsor Goodenough, Ryley Rasmussen, Sterling Skrede, Garrett Spafford, Sawyer Springborn, and Trevor Trautsch. Wyndsor Goodenough and Julia Stoleson were crowned 2019’s prom king and queen.

For the first time in history, the West Salem High School VAC Team was named state champions! The team was comprised of Anna Johnson, Claudia Dorado, Abby Sharp,  Abby LeDoux, Ada Hage, Matthew Baldwin, Megan Lassig, Samantha Quam, Kendra Davidson, Alyssa Szewczyk, Mahli Fleckenstein, Emma Deal and Morgan Lance.

Star Search 2019 had several student talents and the winners of this years Star Search were Emma Lenselink in 4th place, Dagan Hemker in 3rd place, and tied for 2st place were Nick Stachowitz, Ian Knutson, Trygve Lebakkan, and Nick Noelke. In 1st place was Shanda Athnos.

“This year was one of the best high school years so far,” junior Mckenna Stadler said. “There was so many fun events, accomplishments, memories made, and most of all, making new friends.” Congratulations to everyone for an outstanding school year! Let’s all make next year as successful as this past school year.
