Congratulations to the West Salem High School girls tennis team as they have secured the 2023 conference championship!

As the tennis season is starting to wrap up, fans and athletes can look back at the season as a whole. The WSHS 2023 girls tennis season began on August 8th with a record number of athletes. A total of 54 girls started the season, but 15 were then put on an optional practice squad. The team’s head coach, Julie Kamla, said, “We’ve never had to down-size before, so that was really hard to do.”

The team is coached by Julie Kamla, Brian Baker, and Hailey Hudzinski, and there are three team captains: Senior Asher Helgerson, Senior Danica Hudzinski, and Junior Megan Johnson.

The team is divided into a Varsity and Varsity Reserve/Junior Varsity squad. While ten girls play for Varsity each match, around 14 girls have had the opportunity to play for Varsity this season. At each match, four girls play singles and there are three doubles teams.

Currently, their record for the season is 16-5. When asked about her goals for the rest of the season, Kamla said, “I hope that we finish the season strong and that the VR/JV girls are able to get some match play in vs. Luther, Reedsburg and Onalaska.”

On September 19th, the Varsity squad participated in their last conference dual of the season against Luther. The conference tournament was set to be held on September 23rd, but rain delays pushed it to the 28th.

Sub-sectionals will be on October 2nd in Portage, and if the team qualifies, they will head to La Crosse for sectionals on the 4th.
