The purpose of listening to the three songs in the Folklore love triangle is to immerse yourself in the storytelling that Taylor Swift crafts. There are three major characters in this story, Betty, James, and August. All three songs (‘august’, ‘betty’, and ‘cardigan’) in this trilogy tell the story of James and Betty’s relationship, including the trials of James and August’s affair and how Betty feels about that. The vulnerable story being told allows us to see ourselves in one of the three characters and to listen to show support for them. Hearing their stories may also aid us in our own romantic journeys and help us to cope with growing up. They are more than just songs, they are truly a form of art.
