On November 11th, students and staff at West Salem High School held a Veterans Day assembly in the Heider Center. The band and choir performed and members of the American Legion came.
NHS members at West Salem thanked veterans for their service and the sacrifices they made to keep the country safe. Phil Parr, a Autos and Metals teacher, gave a speech himself because he was also in the military. “As a veteran, I was honored to be our guest speaker,” Parr said. “I think that, as a teacher, my message may have hit differently than most of the speakers that we have had in the past.”
The band played through all the military branches’ songs. Students and community members stood up to honor people they knew who were in the military when they heard the song of that person’s branch.
After the band stopped playing, the American Legion retired the colors. Following the assembly, community members were able to stay at the Heider Center for a small reception.
