Jon Iliff ’24 works on his presentation for State Forensics.

The start of the new year is the start of the Forensics season, and Ms. Armstrong and Mrs. Volden have started holding meetings for students interested in Forensics. Forensics is a program designed to give students a chance to practice their public speaking skills in a friendly environment. “Forensics is a great starting point because you become very polished and confident as a speaker,” says Ms. Armstrong, one of the forensics advisors.

Forensics is also very easy for beginners to jump into for the first time, due to its easy-going nature and welcoming environment. “I think Forensics is a great opportunity to enhance my public speaking specifically,” says Anya Sandvick, a first-time participant.

Like Anya, many people who participate do so to improve their public speaking. The Forensics team has had many victories as participants prepared, practiced, and presented their pieces. After the state competition, the West Salem team walked away with two golds, five silvers, and two bronze medals.

On top of this, the activity has made itself its own community. “I participated in Forensics as a high schooler, so it feels good to give back to new people as an advisor,” says Mrs. Volden, the other Forensics advisor.

Forensics is still accepting new recruits to join. If you’re interested, talk with Ms. Armstrong or Mrs. Volden. The first Forensics competition will be held on February 20, 2024.
